AdBlue®
Because Ampol AdBlue® is a fully VDA approved and certified product, it means our manufacturing processes have passed rigorous inspections and ongoing audits to ensure consistent product quality that complies with strict ISO standards. Only certified VDA AdBlue® suppliers are licensed to sell branded AdBlue®.
Non VDA approved urea solutions do not offer the same guarantee of performance, product quality, and consistency. Inconsistency of product due to inferior ingredients, contaminants and unsuitable manufacturing processes can lead to:
Blocked sites within the SCR catalyst leading to downtime and costly repairs.
Reduced conversion of NOx causing increased frequency of system warning alerts.
Ampol AdBlue® is also available in 1000-litre (IBC) or 210-litre drums, and 10-litre top-up packs, with bulk delivery to customer storage facilities nationwide if required.
Non-VDA approved urea solutions do not offer the same guarantee of product quality and performance.
AdBlue is a registered trademark for Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). The trademark is owned by the German Association of the Automotive Industry, commonly known in German as Verband der Automobilindustrie (VDA) and they stipulate some additional requirements for licensees related to the storage and distribution of AdBlue.
Yes, Ampol AdBlue 10L containers are fully recyclable.
All AdBlue is manufactured the ISO 22241 international standard and the finished product must comply with tight specifications listed under this standard. On a fundamental level, there should not be a difference between AdBlue manufactured under different VDA licencees.
AdBlue must only be poured into the AdBlue/DEF fill port. It must never be mixed with fuel or be dispensed into the fuel filler. AdBlue is water based and will damage the engine if it is mixed with fuel. If misfuelling does occur, switch off the engine immediately and contact your road assistance provider to arrange for the vehicle to be towed to a service centre.
The AdBlue fill port is a smaller diameter than the diesel fill port to prevent the diesel nozzle from entering the AdBlue filler.
AdBlue is partially alkaline and can damage paintwork if it’s left on the surface. If AdBlue is spilled on the vehicle paintwork, simply wash it off with water and dry the area.
AdBlue is highly corrosive to aluminium, brass and bare steel and these surfaces should be washed down with water immediately to prevent surface corrosion.
AdBlue is an aqueous solution of urea and demineralised water and the product can freeze if stored below -11.5oC. Vehicles with SCR systems are fitted with tank heaters to ensure the AdBlue flows into the system as required upon startup.
AdBlue is best stored in a sealed container at room temperature. Under these conditions, AdBlue will last for 12 months.
Vehicles that require AdBlue will have a dedicated fill point that is clearly marked as DEF or AdBlue. Passenger vehicles can easily be filled using our handy 10L top up packs. These feature an extended nozzle secured in the top of the pack that is attached to the pack once the cap is unscrewed. The product can then be poured into the AdBlue fill point. Most passenger vehicles will have an AdBlue tank capacity between 12-20 litres.
A fine mist of AdBlue is injected into the exhaust stream where it heats up and splits into Ammonia and Carbon Dioxide. The nitrogen oxide gases in the exhaust react with the ammonia and the catalyst and they are converted into nitrogen gases and water vapour and released into the atmosphere via the tailpipe.
AdBlue is a mixture of 32.5% automotive grade urea and 67.5% demineralised water. Each batch is mixed in a large vessel under controlled conditions and tested for to ensure it meets the specification requirements prior to transfer for bulk storage or for packing into drums, IBCs or small containers.
Typically, a diesel vehicle will consume AdBlue at a rate between 3-6% of diesel use. A 15L AdBlue tank will therefore hold sufficient AdBlue for 250-500 litres of diesel. Depending on the fuel efficiency of the vehicle and the driving behaviour, this could be sufficient for 8,000-10,000km.
Vehicles fitted with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems will have a low AdBlue warning light on the dashboard. The AdBlue tank should be refilled before it is fully empty to prevent the vehicle entering into a limp home, low power mode.
AdBlue levels will also usually be checked and topped up as part of the regular vehicle maintenance process. Please consult your vehicle owner’s manual for more specific information on the AdBlue tank capacity and the level at which the warning light will indicate.
AdBlue is an aqueous solution of urea and water. If the solution is not stored correctly the water can evaporate, leading to crystallisation. Crystallisation in AdBlue can lead to damage of the SCR system. AdBlue should only be decanted from sealed containers or dedicated AdBlue pumps. If using AdBlue from packs, the whole amount should be decanted and not stored. If AdBlue remains in the container, it should be stored at room temperature and the container should be sealed to prevent the evaporation of the water.

Amplify Premium Fuels
There are 3 Amplify Premium fuels:
- Amplify Premium 98 is our highest octane petrol, formulated to meet the exact requirements of the latest high-compression, turbo-charged and performance engines.
- Amplify Premium 95 combines a high octane, friction reducer and rust inhibitor to help give more power and improve performance compared to regular, unadditised petrol.
- Amplify Premium Diesel contains advanced additives to help restore and maintain fuel injector cleanliness.
All 3 contain our unique, multi function additives that help to clean your engine for better performance.
The industry standard testing for clean-up performance allows additive suppliers to benchmark the performance of their products against competitors and a reference fuel in a controlled environment. The test engine specifications and the reference fuel type have been agreed upon as a global standard to ensure consistency when comparing the performance data internationally. It is impossible to recreate this type of testing using every different type of engine in production. Furthermore, the final results may vary depending on the engine itself, environmental conditions, other factors such as variability in engine load factor and driver behaviours.
In addition to industry standard tests, Ampol Australia has conducted local testing encompassing engine dynamometers, chassis dynamometers, highly accurate fuel flow meters and on-road driving tests close to real word conditions. The fundamental benefit of Amplify Premium Fuels is they clean up and keep clean the fuel system, and this has been demonstrated in a range of different sized engines – including those used in the industry standard testing.
Amplify Premium Diesel contains an advanced multi-function additive that includes a cleaning agent and rust inhibitor which clean and protect your engine as you drive. It also has an anti-foaming agent which reduces the incidence of foaming during refuelling for a cleaner and faster fill experience. The multi-function additive is not present in regular diesel, only Amplify diesel hence why we differentiate this product as premium.
The cleaning agent in Amplify Premium fuels starts working immediately but the resultant benefit will be dependent upon the level of injector fouling. Continuous use of Amplify Premium Diesel will result in the clean-up of fuel injector deposits, keep clean of fuel system components and the potential recovery of lost power and fuel efficiency. The time this will take will vary according to vehicle condition, driver behaviour and trip characteristics.
Amplify Premium fuels can be safely mixed with any regular, unadditised fuels. However, by diluting Amplify Premium, you will also dilute its benefits. Mixing regular, unadditised fuel and Amplify Premium will also lower the octane rating. If your vehicle requires a minimum octane rating of 95, for example, the blend may fall below this and hinder the performance of your vehicle until the fuel is changed.
Amplify Premium fuels are the only fuels in Australia using our unique, next-generation additive package. We believe they are the best Premium fuels we’ve ever created in terms of quality, performance and the range of benefits they offer.
Over time, combustion of the fuel and the presence of micro-impurities can lead to deposits forming on the outside surfaces of the injector at the nozzle and within the injector moving parts. These deposits can restrict the flow of fuel as it exits the nozzle tip and also lead to binding of the internal injector components. Amplify Premium Fuels help to remove these internal and external deposits to improve the flow of fuel and allow the engine to recover its lost power.
Many new vehicles can take advantage of the Ampol Amplify premium petrol. Their higher octane and superior additive technology will result in better fuel efficiency and improvement in power and torque. Furthermore, the advanced cleaning agent in Amplify Premium petrol will attack power robbing deposits that form on the inner and outer injector surfaces to help restore power and improve overall performance.
The numbers relate to the octane rating of the petrol. Both 95 and 98 are high octane.
Many newer or turbocharged engines require high octane fuel to perform as intended.
Combustion Catalysts work to improve the efficiency of the combustion process by acting as a catalyst. They can include organometallic compounds, such as ferrocene.
These compounds decompose in the combustion chamber in the early stages of the combustion process to form a metal oxide (such as iron oxide). This metal oxide then acts as a catalyst in the oxidation of unburnt fuel particles in the later stages of combustion.
However, over time their use can be detrimental to the engine and its performance due to their tendency to form deposits on fuel injectors. The main issue with combustion catalysts is that they contain metallic components that form ash (residue) when burnt. This ash can deposit on fuel injectors and build-up on diesel particulate filters. The build-up of ash deposits on fuel injectors can impact combustion efficiency by adversely impacting the fuel spray pattern and thus fuel/air mixing within the combustion chamber. This can result in lower power output for the given amount of fuel burnt, increased fuel consumption, and potential higher emissions of unburnt hydrocarbons. For this reason, their use is generally not recommended and is the reason why Amplify Premium Diesel does not contain a combustion catalyst.
Most vehicle manufacturers provide guidance about the recommended fuel for your vehicle. Minimum requirements of the recommended fuel will take into account the broad availability of fuel grades across the country. Ampol Amplify premium fuels contain a multi-function additive that is designed to clean and protect the fuel system of your vehicle as you drive. Our premium petrol grades also have higher RON (Research Octane Number) than regular unleaded petrol and provide additional combustion efficiency benefits in modern engines.
Amplify Premium Diesel was developed for on-road applications. Amplify Diesel HD performance diesel was developed for heavy duty, high load applications such as mining, construction and power generation equipment. The formulation has been optimised to clean up and keep clean the fuel system under the demanding conditions presented in these working environments.
Although the fuels are interchangeable between machinery and engines the availability of the fuels does differ. Amplify Diesel HD is only available in bulk for delivery direct into on-site tanks whereas Amplify Premium Diesel is available at over 1,400 retail sites nationally and via bulk delivery.
There are 4 key benefits that separate Amplify Premium fuels from regular, unadditised fuels. They contain our unique, multi function additives that help your engine work at its peak.
All Amplify Premium fuels
CLEANING AGENT
Our unique cleaning agent helps detox engines by removing fuel injector deposits as you drive. This can help restore engine performance.
RUST INHIBITOR
Over time abrasive rust particles can build up and cause engine parts to wear. Our rust inhibitor prevents the formation of rust, helping to keep engines healthier for longer.
Amplify Premium 95 and 98
FRICTION REDUCER
Metal parts in an engine can rub together while the engine is running.
Our friction reducing additive keeps parts moving freely and protects against engine wear.
Amplify Premium Diesel
FOAM INHIBITOR
Regular diesel can foam as drivers fill up. This can be messy and may take longer to fill.
Our new anti-foaming agent helps overcome both of these issues for a cleaner and faster fill that forms no stable foam.
Most modern petrol and diesel engines employ high pressure direct fuel injection systems for optimum control of the fuel flow. This type of system places the injector inside the combustion chamber where it is directly exposed to the temperature and pressure of combustion. Deposits form when small amounts of fuel remain on the injector tip surface after the engine is stopped. The residual heat in the injector effectively cooks the fuel leading to a carbon-based deposit forming on the injector surface.
A second source of deposits originates from micro-contaminants in the fuel itself. The modern supply chain of fuel is complex and involves refining, sea freight, pipelines, tanker trucks and retail dispensing. Micro-contaminants form due the additives that may be introduced during the refining process, salt contamination during shipping and insufficient filtration in the vehicle itself.
Both of these sources of deposits can lead to blocked nozzles in the injector tip and binding of the internal injector mechanism which can affect the flow of fuel into the combustion chamber. At best, the fuel flow may be restricted and potential uneven spray pattern which leads to a loss of power. At worst, the injector may work intermittently or will severely restrict the flow of fuel which can lead to a significant loss of power.
Everyone. No matter what the age or condition of the engine, the cleaning effect of our additives can help to output more power, achieve better acceleration and smoother running.
High octane Amplify Premium 95 and 98 are suitable for all vehicles designed to run on unleaded petrol.
Ampol Amplify Premium fuels have been developed and tested to suit tough Australian conditions. We continually improve our extensive range of fuels to ensure we keep pace with engine technology developments. In 2020, we are launching Ampol Amplify Premium Petrol - our most advanced technology with better cleaning performance in direct injection gasoline engines – and Amplify Premium Diesel fuel with the latest deposit control additive technology with proven performance thru industry standards and local trials.
The Worldwide Fuel Charter (WWFC) for Gasoline and Diesel Fuel, provides guidelines on how fuel quality can significantly affect engine and vehicle operation, durability and emissions performance. Its sixth edition published in 2019, states that the conformity of modern engines with their specified performance in terms of power, fuel consumption and emissions over time will depend largely on the cleanliness of their injectors.

E10 Bio Unleaded
Yes. There’s no problem mixing Ampol E10 Unleaded with Ampol’s regular or Amplify premium unleaded fuel.
Many new vehicles require 95 RON premium unleaded petrol as a result of the manufacturers’ push to lower vehicle emissions by increasing engine compression ratios.
The octane level of Ampol E10 Unleaded petrol is 94 RON which although higher than regular Unleaded, is still not at the level required to prevent pre-ignition in vehicles designed for premium fuels.
Ampol E10 Unleaded is suitable for use in most new and many older cars, utes, vans, and motorcycles as indicated in the owner’s manual. However, ethanol has different solvent properties to petrol and the use of E10 Unleaded petrol may dissolve built-up residues in fuel systems in older vehicles, leading to fuel filter blocking.
Many vehicles will include a label on the inside of the fuel filler door indicating that fuels with up to 10% ethanol are suitable.
Ampol E10 Unleaded is a blend up to 10% ethanol and 90% regular unleaded petrol. To create Ampol E10 Unleaded petrol, the ethanol is mixed into the regular unleaded as the fuel tanker is being loaded at the fuel terminal. The quantity of ethanol introduced into the unleaded petrol stream is carefully controlled to ensure the final blend meets the requirements of the relevant Australian Fuel Quality standards.
E10 Unleaded is a mixture of Ethanol and regular 91 Octane unleaded petrol. Ethanol is a natural product made from crops such as sugar cane, sorghum or wheat. Ampol E10 Unleaded contains 10% ethanol and 90% unleaded petrol, which complies with the limit set under the Australian government’s national fuel standards.
E10 Unleaded can help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Ethanol is a biofuel made from non-fossil fuel sources, such as plant or animal products. Biofuels burn cleaner and are renewable. This means they’re better for the environment than traditional fossil fuels.
The legislation supporting the introduction of ethanol blended fuels was introduced in 2003 and was adopted nationally in 2005. In 2007, the NSW Government mandated that a minimum percentage of all petrol sold by selected major fuel distributors must be ethanol blends. In 2017, the QLD Government also introduced a biofuels mandate that set out minimum percentage of ethanol fuel blends.
Apart from the environmental benefits associated with using Ampol E10 Unleaded, Ampol-sourced ethanol is largely made from Australian-grown sugar, sorghum and wheat crops. Filling up with Ampol E10 Unleaded helps support employment and local businesses in regional Australia.

- Single rate
- You’ll be charged a flat usage rate for the amount of energy used at your home, no matter what time of day. You’ll see this listed on your electricity bill as General Usage and it’s charged in cents per kilowatt hour (or c/kWh).
- Time of use
- Time of use tariffs mean you are charged a different rate for the energy you use at different times of the day. The types of rates are Peak, Shoulder and Off Peak.
- Peak: This is when electricity cost is the highest and generally applies in the evenings. You’ll see this listed on your electricity bill as Peak Usage.
- Shoulder: This is when electricity usage costs a bit less than peak, but more than off peak. Shoulder rates generally apply overnight and in the early mornings. You’ll see this listed on your electricity bill as Shoulder Usage.
- Off Peak: This is when electricity usage charges are lowest and generally applies during the day. You’ll see this listed on your electricity bill as Off Peak Usage.
- Hint: A great way to keep electricity costs down is to run appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines during off peak times.
- Controlled load
- Controlled load refers to electricity which is used for a stand alone item, such as electric hot water systems or underfloor heating. These appliances often have their own meter. We’ll charge a lower rate for that appliance and the energy it uses.
- Controlled Load Usage. This is charged in cents per kilowatt hour (or c/kWh) and reflects the energy usage of the stand alone item.
- Controlled Load Supply. This is charged in cents per day (or c/Day) and is a daily charge which covers the cost of delivering electricity to your controlled load item.
- If you have multiple controlled loads, you’ll incur usage and supply charges for each controlled load.
- Demand
- Demand tariffs are designed to encourage reduced energy usage during peak energy consumption times, which is generally in the evenings as people return home from work and switch on multiple appliances.
- If you’re charged a demand tariff, you will incur usage and supply charges but will also incur a demand charge on top of your general usage. Demand charges are calculated based on the maximum power reading recorded between 4pm and 9pm on any day during your billing period. This maximum power reading is then utilised to calculate your monthly charge.
- You’ll see demand charges on your electricity bill as Demand kW, and it’s charged in dollars per kilowatt per month (or $/kW/month).
- Hint: One way to help keep your demand charge down is to avoid simultaneous use of major appliances (such as dishwashers, washing machines, heating and cooling).
If you have solar installed at your premises, you could also be eligible for a solar feed in tariff. A solar feed in tariff is a credit received on your bill for any unused electricity your home’s solar power system sends back to the grid.
Your supply charge is a daily charge and covers the cost of delivering electricity to your premises, including distributor costs and transmission costs. You’ll see this listed on your Ampol Energy electricity bill as Supply and it’s charged in cents per day (or c/Day).
Usage charges are the rates charged for the amount of electricity you use. These are also known as tariffs.

Lubricants - Mobil Delvac
It’s true that Mobil Delvac can help to extend the life of your commercial vehicle engine.
However, the actual life of an engine prior to overhaul depends on many variables from oil-drain intervals and maintenance practices to your driving habits and the load carried.
But using Mobil Delvac engine oils will certainly help keep the engine-life odds in your favour.
Both in the engine and driveline, it can.
So you have two things to consider: A multigrade product tends to provide better fuel economy than a monograde (e.g., a 5W-40 is better than a 40 grade) and lower viscosity products tend to provide better fuel economy than higher viscosity products (e.g., a 5W-30 provides better fuel economy than both a 10W-30 and a 15W-40).
As equipment ages, deposits and wear accumulate, resulting in a decrease in equipment efficiency. Mobil Delvac™ lubricants are able to protect the engine against deposit formation and wear, and resist soot-induced and oxidative viscosity thickening, allowing the equipment to maintain fuel economy throughout its life, making Mobil Delvac a great choice for diesel engine oil.
During winter weather conditions, vehicle suspension components can be subjected to more adverse conditions, such as increased water and contamination from road salting.
Careful attention is needed to ensure that the suspension components are greased at a regular interval and the proper amount of grease is applied to help minimize the entry of road contaminants, and to replace grease that has been washed out due to excessive water exposure. It is also important not to over grease components as this can rupture seals and lead to reduced component life.
A ruptured seal can lead to loss of grease and lack of lubrication as well as intrusion of road contaminants, water, dirt, etc. Differentials and wheel hubs can be exposed to increased water intrusion during winter months from wet road conditions, high water at curbs, road flooding, etc.
The lubricant condition should be inspected for water contamination when levels are checked.
A visual inspection that shows a hazy or cloudy appearance or visible water droplets can indicate an excessively wet lubricant. Any indication of water intrusion should be investigated for the cause and the lubricant changed.
Many truck engines idle for very prolonged periods during cold winter temperature conditions to allow for warm-up and to keep the cab warm.
Prolonged idling will reduce engine life and also waste fuel. Engines operate cooler while idling, and during long idle periods in winter's cold temperatures, moisture in the intake air can condense in the engine crankcase and produce corrosive sulphuric acid, which can attack soft bearing alloys.
Long idling also contributes to increased soot and combustion contaminants, which will shorten the engine oil's life prematurely and can lead to excessive piston deposits, sludge formation and detrimental viscosity effects.
Choosing a high-performing product like Mobil Delvac is a great step toward long equipment life, but for heavy-duty trucks, you need the right viscosity grade.
Go for a 5W-30 synthetic product to provide protection against wear and maintain oil pressure.
A proper preventive maintenance program is also critical; this not only means that appropriate inspections, check-ups and work are done but also that they are done at the right interval.
For most applications, Mobilgrease XHP 222 is recommended.
It is a National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) #2 lithium complex grease, designed specifically for use in severe on-road, heavy-duty trucking.
It is particularly effective in rust protection. It also has sealing and tacky consistency in dry conditions, and its high-water resistance capabilities help reduce lubricant consumption and increase bearing protection in wet environments.
Most important, it offers very good rust and corrosion protection to help provide long life to bearings and chassis lube points.
Mobil Delvac 1™ synthetic lubricants are fully compatible with their mineral oil counterparts, and it is practical to switch.
The outstanding performance improvements of Mobil Delvac 1 synthetic products over mineral oils can be realised at all kinds of ambient temperatures.
To realise these benefits, including improved efficiency and cost benefits, Mobil Delvac 1 products are recommended to use all year round.
Fifth wheel trailer mechanisms are subjected to a great deal of sliding and shock loading. Typically, fifth wheel surfaces should be coated with NLGI #2 grease before connecting the trailer. Since the existing grease on the surface has probably already collected dirt and other contamination, it should be cleaned before applying new grease.
Some fifth wheel mechanisms also contain a rack and pinion gear for positioning the trailer. These components often require special greases containing solids such as molybdenum disulphide or graphite so that the contact surfaces continue to be lubricated when the grease is squeezed out.
For most applications, we recommend Mobil Delvac™ Xtreme Grease 222 Special. It is a NLGI #2 lithium complex grease, designed specifically for use in severe on-road, heavy-duty trucking.
Mobil Delvac™ lubricants are formulated with a balanced additive system to provide outstanding performance for equipment.
We invest millions of dollars testing our formulations to ensure this performance.
Use of an aftermarket additive can easily throw this balance off, potentially causing severe problems.
Additionally, many equipment builders now state in their service manuals that they specifically recommend against the use of these aftermarket additives.
When you make a decision to purchase Mobil Delvac products, you can rest assured that they are formulated to provide optimal lubricating performance without any need for additional additives.
Changing oil performance standards are directly related to continuously evolving emissions and fuel economy regulations.
In an effort to obtain cleaner air, the trucking industry must abide by these governmental regulations.
That means they are constantly making design changes to their equipment, whether it’s the engine exhaust or implementations to the engine design, generally resulting in a harsher environment for the oil: higher temperatures, higher soot loads or even the need to be compatible with after-treatment systems.
Bottom line? Low emission engines need higher performing products. Therefore, when emissions regulations change, so do oil specifications.
Even if you have an older engine that does not meet the latest emissions standards, it still benefits from oils that are formulated to the latest standards.
Lubricants
Because they flow better at low temperatures, it’s possible to manufacture thinner synthetic oils and it’s these low viscosity oils that modern engines need to help reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
Synthetic oils also have a higher film strength, which gives better protection and reduced wear. And, as they are more stable and less volatile at high temperatures, they work better for longer, effectively reducing the engine’s oil consumption.
Base oils, viscosity modifiers and performance additives are the three vital ingredients that go into engine oils.
Careful selection and skilful blending goes into formulating each lubricant to provide maximum engine protection, making it the perfect diesel engine oil for commercial vehicles.
Mineral oils are derived directly from the crude oil refining process, whereas synthetic oils are altered by chemical processing which improves their chemical structure.
As a result, synthetic oils perform better than mineral oils at all temperatures and are more durable.
As they are higher quality, offer higher performance and longer life, fully synthetic oils cost more than mineral oils.
Synthetic lubricants resist degradation at high temperatures better than conventional oils, leading to long oil life and reduced deposits, sludge, and varnish formation.
At low temperatures, synthetic lubricants flow better than conventional oils, allowing them to reach components faster in order to provide quicker and better protection against wear.
Because synthetic lubricants impart lower friction properties under load, they can help equipment operate more efficiently than conventional oils.
This increased operational efficiency can be seen in improved fuel economy and lower operating temperatures, particularly in axle and transmission applications.
In addition, many equipment builders endorse extended oil drain intervals when properly approved synthetic oils are used.
In fact, many of world’s transmission and axle builders provide an extended warranty for those using approved synthetic lubricants in their equipment.
It’s the job of engine and gear oils to reduce friction between moving parts, protect against corrosion and keep components clean.
By coming between and adhering to metal, the lubricants ensure the components effectively 'float' on a thin film of oil, preventing the metal-to-metal contact that causes friction, heat and wear.
By preventing the build-up of dirt, and keeping engine parts clean and in good condition, lubricants can also help prevent corrosion and premature engine damage.
The better the quality of the oil, the better its long-term ability to perform these functions, ultimately increasing the reliability and performance of the engine.
Lubricants - Industrial
Many rolling element bearings require relubrication of small quantities of grease between grease flushing intervals.
This is best done with a low-pressure grease gun. If seals are in good condition, the quantity of grease needed may be small and infrequent.
Check the amount of grease in the bearing – remove fitting or grease plug to allow excess grease to come out.
Check bearings and seals for excess leakage.
Apply a few “shots” of grease at a time.
Yes, with the following conditions:
If the amount of oil is small, covering only low spots in the surface of the grease.
The grease readily absorbs the oil upon stirring.
Ahead of applying a new grease, thoroughly clean – or flush out – the previous grease from the bearing. This avoids compatibility issues and helps ensure that the new grease can perform at an optimum level.
If this cannot be carried out, mitigating actions should focus on minimizing the amount of the displaced grease remaining in the application, such as by increasing relubrication frequency to facilitate a purge of old grease in a timely manner.
Where bearings are subject to contamination, more frequent relubrication may be necessary.
Contamination will lead to unusual operation such as hot, noisy, vibrating or leaking bearings. Be sure to spot, report and act on those.
How important is cleaning excess grease and dirt?
Be sure to clean up all excess grease and dirt from the bearing and surrounding areas. Excess grease and dirt on external surfaces acts as an insulator and prevents heat dissipation. Additionally, excess grease on the external surfaces and floors can introduce a safety hazard to personnel.
Follow these steps for bearings equipped with fitting and no drain:
1. If safe, remove fitting while equipment is running at operating temperature to allow any purging of excess grease in the bearing.
2. Clean and replace fitting. Pump a limited quantity of grease into the bearing to avoid rupturing the grease seal.
3. Remove the fitting and allow the equipment to run at its operating temperature for several minutes to purge excessive grease. If no grease purges, the bearing was most likely very dry; this requires repeating steps 2 and 3 until excess grease purges.
4. Replace the grease fitting.
Follow these steps for bearings equipped with fitting and drain:
1.Remove lower drain plug; clean out any hardened grease. Wipe the grease fitting clean.
2. Pump grease into the fitting until old grease is purged and new grease appears. If it is safe and practical, it is preferable to run the machine while performing this task.
3. While the drain plug is removed, allow the machine to run at operating temperature. This allows the grease to expand and forces the excess out the drain orifice, thus relieving the internal pressure. The excess grease will cease draining when normal pressure in the bearing housing is reached (approximately 10 to 30 minutes).
4. Clean and replace the drain plug.
Follow these steps for bearings equipped with relief-type fitting and no drain:
1. Clean the fitting and pump grease into the bearing until grease relieves from the relief fitting.
2. If, after considerable grease pumping, grease does not come out of the relief fitting, the relief slot may be plugged. Remove the relief fitting and clean the relief slot or replace with a new fitting. Repeat step 1 after the fitting has been cleaned or replaced.
3. Run the equipment at operating temperature and check for excess grease at the relief fitting.
A bearing should never be greased more than two-thirds full – leaving one-third air space – to allow for optimal operation.
Refer to the bearing builder manual to determine the exact grease quantity required.
Unfortunately, there's no one single answer, because there's a long list of factors that influence relubrication frequency.
Generally, the smaller the bearing and faster the speed, the less frequent the interval for relubrication with grease. Larger, slower bearings require more frequent relubrication.
Different types of bearings require different relubrication frequencies:
Radial ball = base interval
Cylindrical roller = 5 times as frequent
Thrust-ball and roller = 10 times as frequent
Store your bearings in their original packaging. The best ways to store bearings is horizontally in a dry place and in their original, unopened package. Never place bearings on a dirty surface.
Rotate your bearings while they’re in storage. For greased bearings, periodically turn over sealed and shielded bearings to prevent the grease from settling on one side.
Use identical bearings for replacements. If needed, contact your authorized bearing distributor or manufacturer for interchange information.
Never wash new bearings before installation. The bearing manufacturers take great care to package and ship bearings that are dirt-free and ready for lubrication. There’s really no need to wash them or remove protective slushing compound.
Higher temperatures increase a grease oxidation rate, typically doubling it for every 10°C (18°F) rise above 65°C (150°F). Grease softens as temperatures increase and may become fluid enough to leak out of housings. And oil separation and volatility also increase with temperature.
Therefore, high temperature operation requires relubrication more often; high-temperature greases that have the capability to maintain structural stability, oil separation, volatility and oxidation under control can help extend that frequency.
Intervention on machinery requires a prior risk analysis to identify potential mishaps during or as a consequence of the maintenance, and therefore determine a safe sequence of events and required protective gears.
Beware in particular of high-pressure build up in the dispensing devices or in the bearing when conducting regreasing operations
Winter Diesels
In Australia the specification for diesel varies seasonally. In winter, fuel manufacturers are required to produce diesel where the temperature at which wax crystals
begin to form is lowered. From time to time and in certain locations, the Cloud Point determined in the Australian Standard may not be low enough to protect the diesel from waxing up.
Our Highland and Alpine diesel products not only conform to these requirements but are formulated to have lower cloud points.
All diesel fuels contain wax molecules. These are natural components of the crude oil that diesel is produced from.
Wax is considered an important diesel component because of its high cetane value (for good ignition quality of the fuel).
However, in severe winter conditions especially in inland or high country areas, the diesel may get cold enough for the wax to start to crystallise (solidify).
If enough wax crystals solidify, the fuel lines, filters and strainers in diesel powered engines and machinery may become blocked and as a result may become difficult or impossible to start and operate.
This phenomenon is known as “waxing”.
Emergency procedure for cold start
Should wax crystals cause a problem, then the following emergency start up procedure has been taken from Australian Standard AS 3570-1998.
Check dipstick to ensure engine oil is fluid. If the engine oil is fluid, go to step 2. If it is not fluid do not attempt to start the engine because waxy fuel in the crankcase has frozen. Wait until the oil becomes fluid. Using external heat source such as a blow heater, steam line or exhaust gases from another vehicle will speed up the process. Once the oil is liquid then replace it with fresh oil in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
Attempt to start the engine. If the engine fails to start then check the fuel filter for wax. If the fuel won’t flow or is hazy then the filter body and fuel lines will need to be heated using a blow heater or steam cleaner. Once the engine starts, run it at low speed until it is warm. This will prevent further blockages.
NEVER
Rev the engine violently after starting. This could damage the injection pump and bearings.
NEVER
Light a fire under the vehicle fuel tank or around equipment.
NEVER
Add petrol to diesel fuel. Petrol has a low flash point, viscosity and cetane, and the resulting blend may result in increased fuel system wear and operational problems.
Ampol Winter Diesel blends are specially formulated diesel products with lower cloud points compared to regular diesel. They are formulated to our strict quality standards to inhibit waxing and crystal formation.
Ampol conducts regular testing of our winter diesels for quality assurance purposes, providing our customers with quality and peace of mind.
