AdBlue®

AdBlue® is a chemical solution of technical grade urea (also called carbamide) in water, which is manufactured to ISO quality standards 22241-1, 2, 3 and 4 as well as DIN70070 and CEFIC standards.
Stricter emission standards in Australia have been implemented in recent years, including EURO 4 and 5. To meet these standards, diesel engines have been redesigned to utilise selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems that require the addition of AdBlue® to minimise exhaust emissions.

Because Ampol AdBlue® is a fully VDA approved and certified product, it means our manufacturing processes have passed rigorous inspections and ongoing audits to ensure consistent product quality that complies with strict ISO standards. Only certified VDA AdBlue® suppliers are licensed to sell branded AdBlue®.

Non VDA approved urea solutions do not offer the same guarantee of performance, product quality, and consistency. Inconsistency of product due to inferior ingredients, contaminants and unsuitable manufacturing processes can lead to:

Blocked sites within the SCR catalyst leading to downtime and costly repairs.

Reduced conversion of NOx causing increased frequency of system warning alerts.

AdBlue® is also available from a number of Ampol truck stops nationwide. Find AdBlue® near you here.

Ampol AdBlue® is also available in 1000-litre (IBC) or 210-litre drums, and 10-litre top-up packs, with bulk delivery to customer storage facilities nationwide if required.
Not only is Ampol AdBlue® fully VDA approved, it also meets stringent ISO 22241-1, 2, 3 and 4 standards, ensuring maximum performance and reliability of your SCR system.

Non-VDA approved urea solutions do not offer the same guarantee of product quality and performance.

Amplify Premium Fuels

There are 3 Amplify Premium fuels:

  • Amplify Premium 98 is our highest octane petrol, formulated to meet the exact requirements of the latest high-compression, turbo-charged and performance engines.
  • Amplify Premium 95 combines a high octane, friction reducer and rust inhibitor to help give more power and improve performance compared to regular, unadditised petrol.
  • Amplify Premium Diesel contains advanced additives to help restore and maintain fuel injector cleanliness.

All 3 contain our unique, multi function additives that help to clean your engine for better performance.

The industry standard testing for clean-up performance allows additive suppliers to benchmark the performance of their products against competitors and a reference fuel in a controlled environment. The test engine specifications and the reference fuel type have been agreed upon as a global standard to ensure consistency when comparing the performance data internationally. It is impossible to recreate this type of testing using every different type of engine in production. Furthermore, the final results may vary depending on the engine itself, environmental conditions, other factors such as variability in engine load factor and driver behaviours.

In addition to industry standard tests, Ampol Australia has conducted local testing encompassing engine dynamometers, chassis dynamometers, highly accurate fuel flow meters and on-road driving tests close to real word conditions. The fundamental benefit of Amplify Premium Fuels is they clean up and keep clean the fuel system, and this has been demonstrated in a range of different sized engines – including those used in the industry standard testing.

Amplify Premium Diesel contains an advanced multi-function additive that includes a cleaning agent and rust inhibitor which clean and protect your engine as you drive. It also has an anti-foaming agent which reduces the incidence of foaming during refuelling for a cleaner and faster fill experience. The multi-function additive is not present in regular diesel, only Amplify diesel hence why we differentiate this product as premium.

The cleaning agent in Amplify Premium fuels starts working immediately but the resultant benefit will be dependent upon the level of injector fouling. Continuous use of Amplify Premium Diesel will result in the clean-up of fuel injector deposits, keep clean of fuel system components and the potential recovery of lost power and fuel efficiency.  The time this will take will vary according to vehicle condition, driver behaviour and trip characteristics.

Amplify Premium fuels can be safely mixed with any regular, unadditised fuels. However, by diluting Amplify Premium, you will also dilute its benefits. Mixing regular, unadditised fuel and Amplify Premium will also lower the octane rating. If your vehicle requires a minimum octane rating of 95, for example, the blend may fall below this and hinder the performance of your vehicle until the fuel is changed.

E10 Bio Unleaded

Yes. There’s no problem mixing Ampol E10 Unleaded with Ampol’s regular or Amplify premium unleaded fuel.

Many new vehicles require 95 RON premium unleaded petrol as a result of the manufacturers’ push to lower vehicle emissions by increasing engine compression ratios.

The octane level of Ampol E10 Unleaded petrol is 94 RON which although higher than regular Unleaded, is still not at the level required to prevent pre-ignition in vehicles designed for premium fuels.

Ampol E10 Unleaded is suitable for use in most new and many older cars, utes, vans, and motorcycles as indicated in the owner’s manual. However, ethanol has different solvent properties to petrol and the use of E10 Unleaded petrol may dissolve built-up residues in fuel systems in older vehicles, leading to fuel filter blocking.

Many vehicles will include a label on the inside of the fuel filler door indicating that fuels with up to 10% ethanol are suitable.

The use of E10 blends reduces tailpipe emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) but emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOX) are increased. Additionally, on a full life cycle basis E10 Unleaded can have some greenhouse gas abatement benefits depending on how the ethanol is produced most ethanol currently produced in Australia will be able to demonstrate moderate levels of greenhouse gas abatement.

Ampol E10 Unleaded is a blend up to 10% ethanol and 90% regular unleaded petrol. To create Ampol E10 Unleaded petrol, the ethanol is mixed into the regular unleaded as the fuel tanker is being loaded at the fuel terminal. The quantity of ethanol introduced into the unleaded petrol stream is carefully controlled to ensure the final blend meets the requirements of the relevant Australian Fuel Quality standards.

Lubricants - Mobil Delvac

It’s true that Mobil Delvac can help to extend the life of your commercial vehicle engine.

However, the actual life of an engine prior to overhaul depends on many variables from oil-drain intervals and maintenance practices to your driving habits and the load carried.

But using Mobil Delvac engine oils will certainly help keep the engine-life odds in your favour.

Both in the engine and driveline, it can.

So you have two things to consider: A multigrade product tends to provide better fuel economy than a monograde (e.g., a 5W-40 is better than a 40 grade) and lower viscosity products tend to provide better fuel economy than higher viscosity products (e.g., a 5W-30 provides better fuel economy than both a 10W-30 and a 15W-40).

As equipment ages, deposits and wear accumulate, resulting in a decrease in equipment efficiency. Mobil Delvac™ lubricants are able to protect the engine against deposit formation and wear, and resist soot-induced and oxidative viscosity thickening, allowing the equipment to maintain fuel economy throughout its life, making Mobil Delvac a great choice for diesel engine oil.

During winter weather conditions, vehicle suspension components can be subjected to more adverse conditions, such as increased water and contamination from road salting.

Careful attention is needed to ensure that the suspension components are greased at a regular interval and the proper amount of grease is applied to help minimize the entry of road contaminants, and to replace grease that has been washed out due to excessive water exposure. It is also important not to over grease components as this can rupture seals and lead to reduced component life.

A ruptured seal can lead to loss of grease and lack of lubrication as well as intrusion of road contaminants, water, dirt, etc. Differentials and wheel hubs can be exposed to increased water intrusion during winter months from wet road conditions, high water at curbs, road flooding, etc.

The lubricant condition should be inspected for water contamination when levels are checked.

A visual inspection that shows a hazy or cloudy appearance or visible water droplets can indicate an excessively wet lubricant. Any indication of water intrusion should be investigated for the cause and the lubricant changed.

Many truck engines idle for very prolonged periods during cold winter temperature conditions to allow for warm-up and to keep the cab warm.

Prolonged idling will reduce engine life and also waste fuel. Engines operate cooler while idling, and during long idle periods in winter's cold temperatures, moisture in the intake air can condense in the engine crankcase and produce corrosive sulphuric acid, which can attack soft bearing alloys.

Long idling also contributes to increased soot and combustion contaminants, which will shorten the engine oil's life prematurely and can lead to excessive piston deposits, sludge formation and detrimental viscosity effects.

Choosing a high-performing product like Mobil Delvac is a great step toward long equipment life, but for heavy-duty trucks, you need the right viscosity grade.

Go for a 5W-30 synthetic product to provide protection against wear and maintain oil pressure.

A proper preventive maintenance program is also critical; this not only means that appropriate inspections, check-ups and work are done but also that they are done at the right interval.

Lubricants

Yes, you can change to a different viscosity according to commercial vehicle usage, environmental and climatic conditions.
No. Look instead for a reputable brand like Mobil Delvac, for a product that meets specifications set by industry and original equipment manufacturers and buy products you know to be authentic from a trusted supplier.

Because they flow better at low temperatures, it’s possible to manufacture thinner synthetic oils and it’s these low viscosity oils that modern engines need to help reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Synthetic oils also have a higher film strength, which gives better protection and reduced wear. And, as they are more stable and less volatile at high temperatures, they work better for longer, effectively reducing the engine’s oil consumption.

Viscosity is a measure of thickness. At low and high temperatures, the viscosity of oil is measured on a scale determined by the Society of Automotive Engineers and given an SAE number to indicate this – so an SAE 30 will be thinner than an SAE 40 oil.

Lubricants - Industrial

Mixing different greases, even those with similar thickener types, can sometimes lead to ineffective lubrication resulting in damage of the lubricated components. If not spotted soon enough this may lead to equipment failure.

Many rolling element bearings require relubrication of small quantities of grease between grease flushing intervals.

This is best done with a low-pressure grease gun. If seals are in good condition, the quantity of grease needed may be small and infrequent.

Check the amount of grease in the bearing – remove fitting or grease plug to allow excess grease to come out.
Check bearings and seals for excess leakage.
Apply a few “shots” of grease at a time.

Yes, with the following conditions:

If the amount of oil is small, covering only low spots in the surface of the grease.
The grease readily absorbs the oil upon stirring.

Ahead of applying a new grease, thoroughly clean – or flush out – the previous grease from the bearing. This avoids compatibility issues and helps ensure that the new grease can perform at an optimum level.

If this cannot be carried out, mitigating actions should focus on minimizing the amount of the displaced grease remaining in the application, such as by increasing relubrication frequency to facilitate a purge of old grease in a timely manner.

Where bearings are subject to contamination, more frequent relubrication may be necessary.

Contamination will lead to unusual operation such as hot, noisy, vibrating or leaking bearings. Be sure to spot, report and act on those.

How important is cleaning excess grease and dirt?
Be sure to clean up all excess grease and dirt from the bearing and surrounding areas. Excess grease and dirt on external surfaces acts as an insulator and prevents heat dissipation. Additionally, excess grease on the external surfaces and floors can introduce a safety hazard to personnel.

Winter Diesels

In Australia the specification for diesel varies seasonally. In winter, fuel manufacturers are required to produce diesel where the temperature at which wax crystals
begin to form is lowered. From time to time and in certain locations, the Cloud Point determined in the Australian Standard may not be low enough to protect the diesel from waxing up.

Our Highland and Alpine diesel products not only conform to these requirements but are formulated to have lower cloud points.

All diesel fuels contain wax molecules. These are natural components of the crude oil that diesel is produced from.

Wax is considered an important diesel component because of its high cetane value (for good ignition quality of the fuel).

However, in severe winter conditions especially in inland or high country areas, the diesel may get cold enough for the wax to start to crystallise (solidify).

If enough wax crystals solidify, the fuel lines, filters and strainers in diesel powered engines and machinery may become blocked and as a result may become difficult or impossible to start and operate.

This phenomenon is known as “waxing”.

Emergency procedure for cold start

Should wax crystals cause a problem, then the following emergency start up procedure has been taken from Australian Standard AS 3570-1998.

Check dipstick to ensure engine oil is fluid. If the engine oil is fluid, go to step 2. If it is not fluid do not attempt to start the engine because waxy fuel in the crankcase has frozen. Wait until the oil becomes fluid. Using external heat source such as a blow heater, steam line or exhaust gases from another vehicle will speed up the process. Once the oil is liquid then replace it with fresh oil in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

Attempt to start the engine. If the engine fails to start then check the fuel filter for wax. If the fuel won’t flow or is hazy then the filter body and fuel lines will need to be heated using a blow heater or steam cleaner. Once the engine starts, run it at low speed until it is warm. This will prevent further blockages.

NEVER
Rev the engine violently after starting. This could damage the injection pump and bearings.

NEVER
Light a fire under the vehicle fuel tank or around equipment.

NEVER
Add petrol to diesel fuel. Petrol has a low flash point, viscosity and cetane, and the resulting blend may result in increased fuel system wear and operational problems.

Ampol Winter Diesel blends are specially formulated diesel products with lower cloud points compared to regular diesel. They are formulated to our strict quality standards to inhibit waxing and crystal formation.

Ampol conducts regular testing of our winter diesels for quality assurance purposes, providing our customers with quality and peace of mind.
